My Knitting Experiment

Updated: Apr 11, 2020

The very last weekend of December 2019. there was a great workshop at HDD (Croatian Designers Association) called „Knit-knit-knit“.

The workshop is organized through project „Center for designing everyday life”, as one of the 15 creative workshops for citizens of all ages in the fields of design, applied arts and related fields. The project emphasis the idea that there is a deep connection between culture and everyday life, so all workshops target focus group results in order to create new educational programs for the institutions involved. About the project read here.

Workshop leaders Igor Galaš and Mario Trešćec

Workshop leaders were Igor Galaš, fashion designer, the knitting guru and Mario Treščec, world winning hairdresser, both members of ULUPUH (Croatian Association of Fine Artists of Applied Arts. Two artists connected the story of knitting clothes and fashion accessories and hair. Participants had a chance to learn hand knitting with needles (Igor) and technique that Mario uses for weaving hair, but with different types of materials. Organizer’s aim for the workshop was to develop creativity and socializing, exchange of knowledge and experience.

Knitted tapestry

As a result participants created unique and useful objects like caps or bracelets. I made knitted tapestry, Igor helped me with yellow pocket, which is actually some recycled parts of his abandoned pieces of knitted material. The pocket is there as my invention to hold the knitted structure straight. Although I find myself more skilled with crocheting, maybe I will use knitting for future projects to express my ideas, who knows. To find out more about the workshop. You can even watch the short video here.

Another great aspect of this workshop is that it promotes recycling, that means creating something new from the materials around us.
